UNLV win their first game in a thriller

Result: UNLV win by 1-wicket :: Scorecard

Sunday, October 15th 2006:

UNLV captured their first win of the season with a thrilling victory over LVCC. The Xpress, who are still standing in first place in the league, lost their second game in a row. Avinash and Girish put on a fantastic partnership to held guide UNLV to victory.

LVCC won the toss and did not hesitate to bat. Overnight rain did not play a part in the pitch conditions as they got off to a flying start thanks to the row of extras and some master class batting by Lenin (26 off 11 balls).  UNLV ended the Xpress’ dominance by capturing wickets in quick succession. Girish, Vamsi and Solomon were the key wicket-takers for their club as they managed to keep the Xpress to a low score of 146.  Aurangzeb and Suriyakumar were the only two who managed to keep the Xpress innings alive in the low-scoring inning.

UNLV’s poor start helped the Xpress gain control of the game early on the inning; however, Girish (38) and Avinash (44) put on a fantastic 4th wicket partnership to stabilize the inning. The Xpress did not help their cause as their players could not hold on to some simple catches in the outfield. Lessons were learned later in the inning as the Xpress gained controlled by taking 5-wickets in quick succession. At this stage, UNLV required 5 runs with 1-wicket to spare. Jahangir, Nasir and David were the key wicket-takers who helped rejuvenate the Xpress bowling attack later in the inning. Finding themselves pinned to a corner, Vinod and Ankit, played a key role toward the end as they managed to score the remainder of the runs.

The Xpress gained a vital lesson as poor fielding performance led them to lose a key win. Their next encounter will be crucial as they will be looking to secure a place in the final.
